Employees at Meta were instructed not to bring up touchy subjects including abortion, gun control, proposed legislation, and vaccine efficacy in the workplace. According to a leaked internal memo from Meta’s head of people Lori Goler, Fortune reported on these changes.
According to a business document Goler wrote, “As Mark previously said, we need to undertake a number of cultural shifts to enable us execute against our priorities,” according to Fortune. “We’re taking this step to make sure that internal conversations are civil, fruitful, and enable us to concentrate. The trade-off is that we’ll no longer permit all forms of expression at work, but we believe that this is the best course of action for the long-term welfare of
When a draught Supreme Court opinion that will overturn Roe v. Wade was released in June, Meta adopted a similar approach. In a paper that the New York Times got at the time, Meta stated that there was a “heightened danger of generating a hostile work environment” when discussing abortion openly at work.
“We truly encourage expression, free discussion, and a company culture focused on respect and inclusivity.” In order to decrease distractions and create a courteous, inclusive work environment where individuals can perform at their best, we’ve modified our employee standards to give guidance about what is appropriate for our people in the workplace.
The policies do not apply to Meta workers who must discuss these subjects in order to perform their duties. These rules don’t apply to places other than the workplace.
As a result of its unsuccessful investments in the metaverse, Meta is currently experiencing financial turmoil. The price of Meta stock, which was over $330 per share at the start of the year, has now fallen by about 50% to $115 per share. In an all-hands meeting over the summer, CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised to raise standards and set more challenging objectives. He informed his colleagues, “Realistically, there are probably a lot of people at the organisation that shouldn’t be here. Then, in the past month, Meta eliminated 11,000 positions, or 13% of its employees.
These new rules prohibiting discussion of delicate subjects are consistent with Zuckerberg’s intention to up the ante at work. According to Goler’s memo, which was obtained by Fortune, the modifications are presented as a strategy to maintain employees’ attention by “minimising disruption.” Goler talked on Meta’s stances on public issues as well.
“We are frequently asked to affix our names to letters of support for causes that are significant but unrelated to our line of work. This may cause us to lose attention on matters not directly related to our objective, Goler noted. As a result, moving ahead, the company will only make public statements on subjects that are essential to operating its service-based business.
